What a surprise and pleasure to welcome Jack Benny to our October 24th lunch meeting.
Wait a minute...Jack Benny ?? Hey ! That was Jack Benny being channeled through
Dick Vaughan of the Sturbridge Rotary Club. And a super job, well done...actually in
keeping with the content of Dick’s speech...that Rotarians can do anything ! Certainly
it would appear that Dick Vaughan can. He outlined his beginning career in radio as a
very young man. The station now is what we know as KISS something or other.
Dick joined the Ware Rotary Club in 1961 and one of his projects was starting Rotary
Radio Day which soon became more than one day and the idea was picked up by other
clubs as well. One focus that Dick emphasized was that we have to market ourselves
if we want to attract new members. We have to let people know about what we do. We
do an incredible lot ! As he asked, “Where would the world be without us “ ? Just
think of polio! And his final words suggested we all need to remind ourselves of the
four-way test in all we do. Thanks, Dick. Goodnight, Gracie.
Fortunate guests enjoying our speaker were Jimmi Ames from Bay State Savings Bank
and Sharon Brown of the Glavin Center. This is her annual visit in conjunction with the
Christmas Party December 11th. It was most helpful being advised of the appropriateness
of the gifts we buy for the clients, particularly regarding books. Not childrens books.
Picture books, yes, but adult. She showed some books she got from the Christmas Tree
Shop...travel books, cook books, big pictures, colorful but of real things.
REMEMBER NEXT WEEK...no lunch on the 7th. INSTEAD dinner on the 8th at the
Double Tree Inn for the FOUNDATION FORUM. The sign-up sheet was passed around
and money collected. We pay our regular $15 and the club pays $10. It is a pleasant,
informative evening and worth the effort. 6:30 pm
NEXT BOARD MEETING...November 14th at 8 AM at the Police Station.
BIRTHDAYS; ReneeMcCue just had one on the 29th. In November, the Scorpio’s
(sex symbols of the zodiac, really ) are Michelle Wheelock on the 6th; Nancy Berglund
on the 7th and Addison Redfield on the 11th. Of course !!
SPELLING BEE next up. The teams are forming...we can always use sponsors if you
have any corporate connections, that we don’t call on for the Pancake Breakfast. The
sponsors make it possible for smaller town groups to be involved...the Library, the
Senior Center for example don’t have a lot of $ for the $250 team fee. Keep in mind that
the whole focus of the BEE is giving back. Even the $1000 winner’s prize goes to a
town need of their choice, and the Rotary $’s do as well, including RI Pure Water
Project. We are at Proctor School this year. Margaret Donohoe, the principle welcomes
us and we will have way more space. Its Friday, November 17th...you will love it.
November speaker assignments will be forthcoming. The Forum change left us without
our togas. One thing I do know is that the 21st is club assembly. Don’t go away !
VOTE ! Wonderful comment by Will Rogers...”Be thankful we’re not getting all the
government we are paying for. “ I guess somethings never change...unfortunately.
