It’s another Rotary note...
On Tuesday, January 29th, Northboro Rotarians were captive in a Civil War
Battle of the Crater, July, 1864, in Petersburg, Virginia. PDG Rotarian,
Mike Razza, made this battle come alive as he recounted the events leading up
to the tunnel and BIG b o o m that four tons of explosives and a ton of short
wicks and the perseverence of gallant soldiers made happen. As Mike explained,
he is interested in the human side of the Civil War, and this battle and the
abilities of a RR engineer, Henry Pleasants, exemplifies this focus. The blast
happened and the follow through attack took awhile as the soldiers
didn’t have ladders to enable them to climb out of the trenches. And, in spite of,
poor leadership and little support, they made it. Mike is a true raconteur and made
for an enjoyable meeting. Also enjoying same were John Kreiss and CJ Soudin
who was a guest at our get acquainted evening.
Mike Razza also made a presentation of last year’s RI Presidential Citation on behalf
of then President Susan Comer, to Mark Leahy, then Club President. That was then!
